Fruit and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are so good for you they can keep your heart healthy, help your body repair itself and can even stop you getting some cancers. Fruits and vegetables contain many different vitamins that your body needs and a lot of fibre which keeps your digestive system working properly.

Are you getting your 5 a day?

We should all eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables – every day. There are lots of different things that can count towards your 5 a day.

Let's see what counts as 1 portion.
  • 1 normal sized fruit –such as an apple, pear, banana or orange

  • 2 medium sized fruits – such as plums or satsumas

  • 1 handful of small fruit – such as grapes, cherries or berries

  • 1 slice of large fruit – such as melon or pineapple

  • 3 Table Spoons of vegetables – such as peas, carrots or broccoli

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of dried fruit – such as raisins or apricots

  • 100% pure fruit juice can also count as 1 portion - but 5 glasses of orange juice won't class as 5 portions!
Eat a Rainbow

There are red peppers, yellow bananas, green beans, orange carrots, purple grapes... All these different colours don't just make fruit and vegetables look nice, they show us that they contain different types of vitamins. This is why we should try and eat a range of coloured fruit and vegetables to make sure we are getting lots of different vitamins.

How can you eat more fruit and vegetables?
  • Eat carrot sticks or celery sticks instead of crisps. They are just as crunchy and taste great with a dip.

  • Banana on toast is a sweet and filling snack.

  • Sprinkle raisins or chopped fruit on your cereal in the mornings.

  • Have an apple or some raisins in your lunch box instead of chocolate.

  • When you fancy a quick snack, check the fruit bowl first!
